Barley Wines and Old Ales
Often associated with with the winter or holiday season, the Barleywine was historically the strongest ale offered by a brewery and was often labeled with the vintage year and aged prior to release. Built on very large malt backbones and featuring intense, complex, and multi-layered malt flavorings. Moderate to high sweetness on the palate with hop bitterness designed to balance the intense malt profile. Alcohol flavors are often present but not too assertive. Original gravity ranges from 1.080 – 1.120. Hop bitterness ranges from 35 – 70 IBUs. Barleywines are broken down into English and American Barleywines and also includes Old Ales.

Deep ruby color. Sweet malts and hops meet ones nose immediately with hints of spice. Flavors of intense caramel malt blend with chocolate and prune and a nice hop bitterness, which makes for a balanced Barley Wine.
GALE’S PRIZE OLD ALE VINTAGE 1996 – OLD ALE 9% (ENGLAND) 11.2oz $12
One of the most unique and finest examples of the style and aged for over 12 years to boot. Chocolate brown in color with only a hint of carbonation. This Old Ale drinks like a Port or a fine Brandy with a seamless harmony between earthy, oaky malts and sweet, viniferous, nutty flavors. A rare treat indeed.
GREAT DIVIDE OLD RUFFIAN BARLEY WINE – 10.2% (COLORADO) 22oz $12
A big, rich, full-bodied American Barleywine, Old Ruffian is deep crimson in color with a full, brownish-tan head. Loaded with roasted toffee, butterscotch and dark fruit flavors, this is a complex and tasty treat. Dry, long-lingering aftertaste with a smooth, warming sensation.
THOMAS HARDY’S ALE – OLD ALE 11.7% (ENGLAND) 8.5oz $12
Brownish-orange in color with a slight head, Thomas Hardy’s old ale is a complex and delicious beer that’s reminiscent of a rich Sumatra coffee or fine cigar. Deep roasted flavors abound with fruit esters that resemble Port and dark fruits, and there are brief moments of spiciness and citrus, but overall this is a lush, silky-smooth treat.
