Barley Wines and Old Ales
Often associated with with the winter or holiday season, the Barleywine was historically the strongest ale offered by a brewery and was often labeled with the vintage year and aged prior to release. Built on very large malt backbones and featuring intense, complex, and multi-layered malt flavorings. Moderate to high sweetness on the palate with hop bitterness designed to balance the intense malt profile. Alcohol flavors are often present but not too assertive. Original gravity ranges from 1.080 – 1.120. Hop bitterness ranges from 35 – 70 IBUs. Barleywines are broken down into English and American Barleywines and also includes Old Ales.
