The Belgian Pale Ale was produced by breweries with roots as far back as the mid-1700’s. The most well known examples were perfected after World War II with some influence from Britain, including hop and yeast strains. Built largely from Pilsner or Pale malts with some Vienna or Munich malts for color. Noble hops such as Styrian Goldings are typically used. In higher gravity Belgian Golden Ales candy sugar is often used. Belgian Blondes are categorized by sweet pils malts and generally finish medium to dry with a light hop profile that is spicy or earthy. Original gravity ranges from 1.062 – 1.075 to as high as 1.095 on Strong Golden Ales. Hops range from 18 – 35 IBU. Most are full of tropical and fresh fruit flavors like green apple, apricot, or peach and often have spicy hints from the Belgian yeast strains and higher primary fermentation temperatures.
