Strong Brown Ales and Winter Warmers
Malty, sweet, and rich often having a chocolate, caramel, nutty, and/or toasty quality. Hop flavor can be light to moderate and may have a citrusy character. It is related to the American Pale and American Amber Ales but with more caramel and chocolate character which tends to balance the hop bitterness and finish. Made with pale malt plus crystal and dark malts. American hops are typical but UK or Noble hops can be used. Original gravity ranges from 1.045 – 1.060 and hop bitterness is 20 – 40 IBU. Winter Warmers are generally distinguished from Strong Brown Ales by the addition of spice or fruit for a ‘seasonal’ quality.
